ok for general use missing some of the more current products, ie steam cleaning units etc...

I try not to buy anything without checking to see what my book said about it first. The ratings are very helpful in buying a new or used item.

The guide itself is really good and very informative. But we are missing about 75 pages from the book. All the charts towards the end are missing which are the most helpful part of the book. I was very disappointed. This was a birthday present for my husband along with 3 other magazine subscriptions. I bought the brand new version of this and it wasn't so brand new...unless they were made with a chunk of pages missing.

Probably Consumer Reports is best known for its accurate ratings on cars. But we also found this guide very useful for recent replacements of a 13-year-old washing machine with a worn out water pump and a toaster. It's a highly recommended little book, with lots of excellent detail on the finer points of mechanical and electronic devices as well.

Look, I see the value in many of CR's ratings, but more and more, their overt bias is affecting their ratings., especially in anything regarding health care.
Other raters have mentioned a 90% accuracy rating for CR, I'd make that closer to 80%.
Their bias towards Japanese items versus U.S. items continues in this guide.
